Showcasing the APO Family: An Interview with Colin Egan

Colin is the lead audio engineer for The American Pops and the owner of Five Spice Records. A dynamic engineer, songwriter, vocalist, and producer, he has mixed FOH at venues including Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, Arena Stage, Green Room 42, and Rockwood, and was the Audio Director / Lead Mixing Engineer for the PBS broadcasts United in Song, Ella Wishes You a Swinging Christmas, We Are Family, One Voice, as well as the National Philharmonic’s 2020-2021 virtual season. We had the chance to sit down with Colin this week and pick his brain –

How did you get connected with APO?

I first met Luke in NYC as a vocalist – I sang for Luke in the National Broadway Chorus, and we had a great musical connection.  After a few years freelancing as an audio engineer/producer in New York, Luke asked if I would consider working with APO as their primary sound engineer, and I jumped at the opportunity!

What was your most memorable APO experience?

The most memorable experience for me so far is filming the PBS New Years’ Eve special “United in Song.” It was such a thrilling production to be a part of, with multiple shoot locations between Mount Vernon, the Kennedy Center, and virtual performances. Mixing that incredible lineup filled with legends was a dream come true.

What music are you listening to right now?

I listen to a mix of pop music and 70s/80s pop & soul, so “Leave the Door Open” by Silk Sonic (Anderson.Paak and Bruno Mars) hit a sweet spot for me.
Lately my artists in heavy rotation are Lizzy McAlpine, Great Good Fine OK, Lake Street Dive, Malia Civetz, and The Shadowboxers

What is your favorite D.C. restaurant?

Casta’s. Delicious Cuban tapas and cocktails with a super warm and friendly vibe. The ambiance reminds me of some of my favorite Brooklyn spots, and they have an awesome outdoor seating area. They opened right before the pandemic started so go support them!

What is your favorite DC concert venue?

Arena Stage. I mixed my first APO show in Fichandler Theater, and we’ve done so many shows there that it feels a bit like home. Their staff is also super hospitable, knowledgeable, and easy to work with.

You can hear Colin’s work on ‘Wicked in Concert” as well as upcoming episodes of “One Voice: The Songs We Share.” In addition to his incredible work as an audio engineer, Colin is also a talented singer! You can check out his music on Spotify, @Colin Egan.
