RESPECT: The Music of Aretha Franklin

Celebrate the iconic music of Ms. Franklin in a concert that highlights some of the greatest hits of her career from “Natural Woman” to “Chain of Fools, “Spanish Harlem” to “Since You’ve Been Gone.” This performance featured Michelle Williams (Destiny’s Child), Moya Angela, Ariana Debose, Nova Payton, and Bria Skonberg.

Tranquility: Yoga with The American Pops Orchestra

Music. Movement. Mindfulness. This tranquil 60-minute yoga practice was accompanied by members of The American Pops Orchestra, and taught by DC Yoga Teacher Michael Peterson. The practice included songs from the greatest American singer songwriters combined into a new 60-minute composition created specifically to marry music and movement. This performance was in partnership with the IMF Family Association and held at the IMF headquarters.

Around the World in 80 Days

And if that weren’t difficult enough, Detective Fix is hot on his heels and trying to stop him! In this hilarious and epic adventure, Phileas leaves the solitary life he loves and must learn to rely on new-found friends if he’s going to complete his goal. He’ll need your help too, to avoid getting caught by Detective Fix!

Told through songs from the great American songbook, this world premiere production revisits Jules Verne’s timeless classic Around the World in 80 Days, in a musical adventure for all ages.

NextGen: Finding the Voices of Tomorrow

The American Pops Orchestra teamed up with Washington, DC chapter of The National Society of Arts and Letters for the first annual vocal competition. Competitors were students and recent graduates from American University, Howard University, Catholic University, Ohio University and more, who competed in first round auditions for Maestro Frazier on their campuses.

The finals held at the Kreeger Theater provided an opportunity for each finalist to sing with a jazz trio from APO in front of a live audience. Our panel of acclaimed guest judges from New York City and Washington, DC selected 2 first place winners and 2 runners-up. All four winners received cash rewards and were guaranteed a mainstage appearance in the APO’s 2018-2019 season.

It’s no secret that Cole Porter loved to be mischievous. Misbehave to the timeless music of Cole Porter paired with some of the funniest personal ads from the era of online dating. From “Anything Goes” to “So in Love”, “You’re the Top” to “Love for Sale.” Featuring pop star Betty Who, Liz Callaway, Ali Ewoldt, Bobby Smith, Vishal Vaidya, and Luke Hawkins!
